Most police tests are multi-staged or multiple sections. Part of the testing will test comprehension. Part will test your memory. Part will test your reasoning skills. Part will test your mechanical skills. Part will test your math skills and so on.The next phase, assuming you pass the written test, will be the physical agility test. In that test you will run like 2 miles, drag your own weight 100 feet, do so many push-ups, so many sit-ups, so many chin-ups and other torture tests.
The third phase is having to pass a polygraph for some police agencies. This test will wash out a good number of candidates.
Next comes the background and credit check. If you have a shaky background or a poor credit check, you’re done.
Next come the reference checks of the people that you listed for references.
When I took the test to become a police officer, it took a little over 9 months to complete the whole testing process. We had over 300 people apply to become officers, out of all those people, the agency only took 5 of us off the hiring list.
