UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
The Department of Computer Science was established in 1998/99 session. During the 1983/84 academic session, undergraduate teaching in Computer Science was started. The essence of the B.Sc.degree programme is to produce enough qualified and competent Computer Scientists and Information Technologists for the country.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The programme for the Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science is designed to provide training in the theory and application of Computer Science. Thus, it emphasises the importance of the underlying theory of various branches of Computer Science and provides a wide spectrum of application areas for the students. The objectives of the course therefore are as follows:
(a). To produce Computer Science graduates who are academically equipped to take an advanced course in Computer Science and or related areas, thus stimulating development and research in these areas and also who are capable of applying computer science and computer technology in solving problems arising in industries, business, government and the society in general.
(b). To provide suitable service course for specialists in other disciplines to enable these specialists to increase their competence, skill and level of proficiency on their various work fields.
(c). To make available modern development in information technology
(d). To serve as the nerve centre of computer research and development efforts of the University of Benin.

EQUIPMENT FOR PRACTICAL AND RESEARCH
The Department of Computer Science has over 100 computer facilities at the Computer Centre Annex, and the Computer Science Computer Room to teach computer science, information technology and computer technology. However, the University is making more efforts to increase the available computers.

INDUSTRIAL TRAINING EXPERIENCE
Industrial training is one of the requirements for the award of B.Sc.degree in Computer Science. Our students are therefore sent on a six months industrial training as follows:
i. 6 months at 300 level
A report must be submitted by students on their SIWES experience. The report will be graded along with the seminar talk and report in CSC419 Seminar (core course).

COURSE EVALUATION METHODS
The performance of Computer Science students is evaluated with the following methods:
i. Practical programming assignments
ii. Theoretical assignments
iii. Quizzes
iv. End of Semester Examination
A maximum score of 25% is allocated to (i) and (iii) while (iv) is allocated a minimum of 75% score.

INTRODUCTION
As a result of the mandatory six (06) months Industrial Training Programme requirements by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National Universities Commission (NUC), the existing B.Sc.programme in Computer Science has to be restructured. Thus, all courses currently being offered during the second semester at the three hundred level (300 level) were moved and redistributed, some to first semester at the 300 level and others to first semester at the 400 level, while the existing structure at the 100 and 200 levels were retained.
SUMMARY:
(a) Admission Requirements remains unchanged
(b) The existing 100 and 200 level course structure remain unaffected
(c) The students are expected to take more courses during the first semester of their 300 level.
(d) The details of the courses affected by the new arrangement at the 300 level and 400 level are given below

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FOUR-YEAR FULL TIME DEGREE PROGRAMME (UME)
Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
(a) At least 5 O-Level credit passes in WASC, SSCE/GCE, NECO SSCE at least five merit passes in Teachers Grade II Certificate Examinations (TC II) or any of their recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language, Mathematics, Physics and two other Science subjects from Chemistry, Biology / Agricultural Science, Economics / Geography, Further/Additional Mathematics.
(b) NOTE: The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subjects are;
i. Use of English
ii. Mathematics
iii. Physics
iv. Chemistry or Biology or Agricultural Science or Economics or Geography

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE THREE-YEAR FULL TIME DEGREE PROGRAMME (DIRECT ENTRY)
In addition to the O-Level requirements listed above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission.
i. At least two Advanced Level passes in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or any of their recognized equivalents at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include Mathematics and any other Science subject.
ii. At least a credit-level pass in the University of Benin Diploma in any of the following:
(a) Data Processing
(b) Science Laboratory Technology
(c) Computer Engineering (DICE)
iii. Diploma from other recognized Universities with at least an Upper Credit level pass in the areas listed in (ii) above
iv. Ordinary National Diploma (OND) with at least an Upper Credit level pass in Data Processing/ Computer Science/ Statistics, Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology.
v. Higher National Dipploma (HND) with at least a Lower Credit level pass in Data Processing/ Comuter Science/ Statistics, Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in the relevant subject areas from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology.
vi. Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least a credit level pass in Mathematics and any other Science subject from a recognized College of Education. In addition, candidates should have at least an overall Merit level pass.
