UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMME
The department offers courses leading to:
i. B.Sc.Hons (Physics)
ii. B.Sc.Hons (Industrial Physics)
iii. B.Sc.Hons (Applied Geophysics)
AIMS AND OBJECTIVE
The four – year B.Sc.(Hons) Degree programme in Physics, Industrial Physics and Applied Geophysics aims at imparting the fundamental principles of Physics to students, giving them a broad –based knowledge of related Science disciplines, and exposing them to major advances in Physics and applications of Physics to industry and the needs of the society.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The successful graduate is equipped not only for teaching studies in Physics but also for careers in government, technical and industrial research establishments, as well as, in commercial and technical firms such as the oil, mining, iron and steel industries including hospitals and medical establishments.

A. Admission Requirements for the Four year Full Time Degree Physics, Industrial Physics and Applied Geophysics Programmes:
Candidates seeking admission into Physics, Industrial Physics or Applied Geophysics Programmes should possess any of the following qualifications:
At least five ordinary level credit passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE, NECO SSCE, WAEC GCE, NECO GCE or at least five merit passes in Teachers GradeTwo(TC II) examination or its recognized equivalent in not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology or Agricultural Science subject.
NOTE: The University Matriculation Examination (UME) subjects are:
a. Use of English b. Physics c. Chemistry d. Mathematics
B. Admission Requirements for the Three – Year Full Time Degree Physics or Industrial Physics Programme (Direct Entry):
In addition to requirement in A and, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
(i) At least two advanced level passes in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or Higher School Certificate (HSC) or its recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include Physics and either of Chemistry or Mathematics.
(ii) At least a merit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma only in any of the following.
(a) Analytical and Industrial Chemistry (DAIC)
(b) Science Laboratory Technology (DSLT)
(c) Geology (DIG)
(d) Computer Engineering (DICE)
(e) Chemical Engineering (DICHE)
(f) Maritime Studies, Information and Communication Technology.
(iii) Diploma from other recognized Universities with at least an upper credit level pass in the areas listed in B (ii) above.
(iv) Ordinary National Diploma (OND) with at least an upper credit level pass in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), Geology/Mining, Polymer Chemistry, Computer Engineering/Science and any other subject area from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology
(v) Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least a lower credit level pass in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in a relevant area, Computer Engineering/Science and other related subject area from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology.
(vi) Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least a credit level pass in Physics from a recognized College of Education. In addition candidates should have at least an overall credit level pass.
(vii) Graduates with Third Class Honours Degree in Science, Engineering and other related subject area from a recognized University.
HIGHER DEGREE PROGRAMME
The Department also offers an M.Sc degree programme in Physics embracing areas of Biophysics/Medical Physics, Metallurgy/Materials Science including Solar Energy, Geophysics, Electronics, and Theoretical Physics.
STAFFING POSITION
Meanwhile, the available staff of the Department will be able to handle the work load of the programmes in Physics, Industrial Physics and Applied Geophysics. However, more staff may be needed in future to be able to adequately cope with the programmes.
DEPARTMENTAL DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for an honours degree in Physics or Industrial Physics a candidate, in addition to satisfying the Faculty requirements, must pass:
a. All 100 Level and 200 Level core courses
b. 90% of all 300 Level and 400 Level core courses
