The stakes in the struggle between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for the destiny of higher education have escalated as a result of two incidents, both of which occurred on October 4.

The Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a rival academic union to ASUU, received its certificate of registration and recognition on October 4 from Dr. Chris Ngige, minister of labor and employment. Another elite group that was a part of ASUU, the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), also received authorization to function as a trade union.
