The stakes in the struggle between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities

The stakes in the struggle between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for the destiny of higher education have escalated as a result of two incidents, both of which occurred on October 4. Will the current events lead to a return to sanity and stability in that area, or will they contribute to fuel the on-going wars? The Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a rival academic union to ASUU, received its certificate of registration and recognition on October 4 from Dr. Chris Ngige, minister of labor and employment. Another elite group that was a part of ASUU, the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), also received authorization to function as a trade union.
